Properties of wool products
Why is it recommended not to use covers for wool blankets?

It is recommended not to use covers for wool blankets as the natural properties of wool are suppressed by the use of covers: air permeability, moisture/vapor absorption and evaporation, micro-massage, and heat generation. It should also be noted that wool warms us, and we warm it, while other fibers do not provide heat on their own – it is our body that must first warm them, so without suing a cover on the blanket we can immediately enjoy the warmth provided by wool. Without cover, the blanket is still low-maintenance and can be aired outdoors more often and washed or cleaned as needed.

If I want to use a cover for my blanket, which ones should I choose?

Blankets can slip and fall in regular covers. That’s why all Flokati blankets have eyelets in the corners for drawstring covers (available in the Flokati range). Attaching the drawstrings to the loops of the blanket will prevent it from slipping or crumbling.

What makes wool fiber special?
  • It is natural. Wool is a protein fiber formed in the skin of a sheep, so it is not man-made but 100% natural.
  • As long as there is grass for the sheep to graze on, they will grow new wool every year.
  • Once the wool has served its useful life, it can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, returning useful nutrients to the soil.
  • Breathable and odor-resistant. The hairs in the wool fiber are curly, creating millions of tiny air gaps once compressed. This unique structure allows the wool to absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture and evaporate it, thus eliminating unpleasant odors.
  • Because it absorbs moisture so well, wool is very rarely electrified. This makes it less likely that a garment made from this material will stick to the body uncomfortably.
  • Stretchy and elastic. Even after being bent and stretched 20 000 times, wool fiber does not lose its original properties and is 7 times more wear-resistant than cotton and 10 times more wear-resistant than silk. Wool fibers shrink when exposed to excessively high temperatures, but can regain its original shape when stretched, therefore, wool products will last for many years with proper care.
  • Suitable for all seasons. Wool responds to changes in body temperature, helping to keep you comfortable in both warm and cold weather.
  • More resistant to stains. Wool fiber has a natural, protective outer layer that prevents stains from forming and absorbing. Wool is less likely to collect dust, and its fatty lanolin makes it easy to wipe off dirt from fabrics.
  • Wool is naturally non-combustible due to its high water and nitrogen content. Wool also has a naturally high level of UV (ultraviolet) protection, which is much higher than synthetic or cotton materials.
Do wool products help solve the problem of sweating?

If sweating is caused by the use of a too warm blanket or other product, then yes, wool can help with this problem by adapting to and regulating body temperature. If sweating is due to physiological problems (we all sweat, but there are some cases of heavy sweating), then a wool product can only help by always staying dry and fresh by absorbing and evaporating moisture (sweat) and unpleasant odors.

Why does the hair of wool products curl?

Wool hair tends to curl naturally. When we start using a wool product, we start to twist, bend, etc., so the hair begins to curl, it is especially noticeable after washing. However, this does not affect the wool properties. In terms of wool type, merino wool is curlier than camel and cashmere.

Why do wool products have a specific smell?

Like many natural products (e.g., leather), wool products have a specific smell that may be more intense at the beginning of use, when the product is first taken out of its packaging. However, not all products have this smell and not everyone necessarily smells it. If you find the smell of the product too strong, it is recommended to ventilate it outdoors, avoiding direct sunlight.

Why does the fiber on woolen products shed?

At the beginning of the use of a wool product, natural fiber loss may occur. To speed up the shedding of unattached hairs, the garment can be shaken out or gently vacuumed.
